Having recently lost my spouse, I had a similar need as your friend.
Here is a list of "Western" books I found comforting:
"Testimony of Light" by Helen Greaves - a dead catholic nun
communicates with her friend telepathically and "dictates" this book
describing the afterlife
"Healing Grief", "Talking to Heaven" by James van Praagh - he was
the "John Edwards" of the 80s (I think); famous medium recounts
sessions with clients and their deceased loved ones and how it can
help us in daily life - "Healing Grief" was especially fitting in
my situation.
"Life after life" by Raymond Moody - near death experiences with
descriptions of what we might encounter upon death, apparently this
is a classic from the 70s, one of the first to deal with this subject
"Many lives, many masters", "Only love is real" by Brian Weiss -
traditional psychotherapist "stumbles" upon past-life regression
during hypnosis of one of his patients - book about reincarnation and
past lives
"Journey of Souls", "Destiny of Souls" by Michael Newton - case
studies of life between lifes, reincarnation

Subject: Request for reading material
Dear netters,
I have new friend who just (2 months ago) lost her daughter (21) in
an auto accident (daughter's fault). My friend is in the stage of
trying to "know" where her daughter is right now, i.e., what happens
after death, and is looking for answers through all faiths (she is an
actively practicing Christian and believes in reincarnation; in fact
her husband is an assistant pastor at a presbyterian church here).
Do any of you have suggestions as to books, etc. that she might
explore? She is reading the Tibetan Book of the Dead right now but
not getting much out of that (pretty heavy technical stuff as I
recall).
Anyway, thanks for your help.
Jai Amma,
Triguna
