MOTHER'S KITCHEN

"It
is our compassion and acts of selflessness that take us to the depths of spirituality.
Selfless action is the means by which we eradicate the ego that is concealing
our true Self.
Detached, selfless action leads to liberation. Such action
is not just work; it is karma yoga."---Amma
"Children,
love the poor wholeheartedly. Go to their level. Believe that it is your Dharma,
your God-given duty to love and serve the poor. No matter how rich we are,
as long as we are not
prepared to be compassionate towards the poor, we are
truly living in utter poverty. Such people
are thetrue destitutes in the eyes
of God. It is no use lighting a lamp before God and making
offerings in the
temple if you do not care to provide some light to the unlit hovels of the poor.
We should love them and we should serve them. Without this, no amount of meditation
we may do will bestow on us the bliss of meditation. It is kindness and service
to others
that imparts the sweetness of meditation."---Amma

Until November 2003, we were providing bag lunches on the first Sunday of every month and the Sai Center was providing the hot lunches on the same day. Since our Satsang has grown and due to lot of enthusiasm among the members, we expanded our Seva to provide hot lunches on the fourth Sunday of every month to about 150 homeless at the Neil Good Day Shelter in downtown San Diego. From January 2007, we have further expanding our Seva doing Mother's Kitchen twice a month - last Sunday of the month and the second to last Sunday of the month.
Our first attempt at hot lunches was on December 28th, 2003. A few of us cooked large trays of lasagna, some others brought warm bread, others brought fresh crispy salad. We also had a huge collection of warm clothes and blankets that we distributed. The folks at the shelter were extremely surprised and pleased since they usually do not get any lunch on the fourth Sunday.
Location and Time: Outside Neil Good Day Shelter, located at 299 17th Street, San Diego, CA 9210. We meet at 11:30 A.M. If you wish to volunteer for Mother's Kitchen to help us with this wonderful and fulfilling Seva, please contact Lalitha at lalitha@aol.com or sdammasatsang@yahoo.com - mentioning what seva you'd like to do?
